The outpouring of support this week has been overwhelming and I really appreciate all the comments, emails, and phone calls. I experienced similar support over on halifaxtalk.com. I especially appreciate board member Joe Gasperini and his constant willingness to post on Halifax Talk.

I gathered my thoughts enough to compose an email to send to Principal Randolph, Superintendent Stapleton, and all of the school board members.

Here it is...

I am writing to inform you all of my extreme disappointment with our school system.

My daughter, Melissa Rice, is a senior at the high school. She has worked hard her entire high school career to earn the credits required to receive an advanced diploma. Knowing that this would be her last year to complete the required courses, my wife, Patricia, and Melissa met with her guidance counselor, Sharon Hicks, last Spring to ensure that she would be registered for all the required classes this year. They were assured that her choices would put her on track to receive an advanced diploma.

Last week Melissa was called to the guidance office to meet with Ms. Hicks. She informed Melissa that the Ecology class she’d been attending for almost three weeks would not qualify her for an advanced diploma. Ms. Hicks’ solution was to replace Ecology with Anatomy this semester. Melissa did not want to take Anatomy at all, so we were not willing to have her start an advanced science class three weeks into the semester. My wife again met with Ms. Hicks and they worked out a compromise. Melissa’s schedule was changed and she was placed into College Level English this semester, and in the second semester she will be in advanced Ecology, which qualifies her for the advanced diploma.

The transition into the English class has not been easy. The class had been working on a research project for some time and Melissa struggled over the weekend to catch up. She had to turn in sixty research note cards on Monday. She worked very hard and completed the assignment on time.

I understand that errors are inevitable and the job we entrust to the guidance department is huge. However, no one in the guidance department accepted responsibility for the error or offered a sincere apology. How can we expect our young people to learn to accept responsibility for their errors when their school administrators and counselors refuse to accept and apologize for their own errors?

Melissa is also in the second year of Trina Vaughan’s excellent Equine Management program. She was chosen by Ms. Vaughan to represent her class at the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Equine Center held on Wednesday. I’m sure you can imagine how exciting that was for Melissa. Getting to meet Governor Kaine alone would be a huge honor, but she was more excited because it would be the first time she would represent her school at a major event.

On Tuesday Melissa was informed by Ms. Vaughan that she would not be allowed to attend the ceremony because her first block class is at the STEM Center. This decision was made by Principal Griles. Obviously she didn’t think it was appropriate for Melissa to miss a single Pre-Calculus class in order to represent the entire student body at an important press conference. My wife called to speak with Ms. Griles before the ceremony on Wednesday. Ms. Griles returned the call after the ceremony was finished and explained that Ms. Vaughan was instructed to submit her choice of students to attend the ceremony and pending her approval, she would inform Ms. Vaughan if the students were approved or not. Essentially Ms. Griles placed the blame on Ms. Vaughan because she told the students before they were approved by Ms. Griles.

My wife asked Ms. Griles if she could explain why it was appropriate to send Melissa into College Level English class three weeks late, but it was not appropriate for her to miss a single Pre-Calculus class to attend a prestigious ceremony. Ms. Griles gave no answer.

As parents, I’m sure you can understand our concern. Melissa isn’t in the top ten percent of her class, and she is not an athlete. This was likely her only chance to represent the school and to feel the pride that comes with that. The degree of her disappointment is difficult to express with mere words.

Our ‘middle of the road’ students seem to be at a definite disadvantage in our school system. Top performers (both academic and athletic) are lauded continually and troublemakers receive their share of attention, while average students working hard every day to get the best education possible so they can become successful adults are consistently ignored by the system.

I know that there is nothing that can be done now since the ribbon-cutting ceremony is long over. My hope is that you will use Melissa’s experiences and disappointments as a catalyst to re-examine the arbitrary enforcement of bureaucratic policy and instill in the administration how important it is to accept responsibility and to apologize for errors, intentional or not. As with any problem in life, accepting that a problem exists is the first step to correcting it.

Rules are important, but inconsistent and blind enforcement does a great disservice to our students and society as a whole.

Melissa has given up on Halifax County High School and is counting the days until graduation. She has great plans for her future and cannot wait to move on to college and adulthood. She feels that her chance of having a great senior year is over. I ask that you do not let this happen to another student.

Thank you for your time.

Frustration

Halifax County High School is pretty low on my list right about now. Let me explain..

Last spring Trisha went to meet with Melssa and her guidance counselor to ensure that Melissa's classes for this year would give her all the credits she needs to receive an advanced diploma. Everything seemed to be fine. When her schedule arrived everything still seemed fine and we started the school year without a hitch.

In the third week of school Melissa got called to the guidance office and was informed that the Ecology class she was in wouldn't give her the proper credit and she would be short one science credit for the advanced diploma. Her counselor wanted to change her into Anatomy, which Melissa wanted to avoid taking in the first place. Keep in mind that all classes are now three weeks in and in the middle of projects, etc.

Trisha went in and talked with guidance again and worked out a compromise. Melissa started her CL English class this semester and will be in the Advanced Ecology class next semester. At this point we aren't sure exactly what the rest of her second semester schedule will be. Melissa was a lot more comfortable to go into English three weeks late than any other class, but it's still been a huge struggle. The teacher wasn't happy about having a student added to her class, and they are in the middle of a huge project that they've been working on since the first week of school. She had to work hard all weekend to produce sixty research note cards. I don't mind her having to work hard, and to her credit she handled it very well.

The worst part about that entire fiasco is that guidance never really offered an apology or any explanation to explain the error.

The next fiasco is a bit more emotional. Melissa is in Equine Management II this semester. She loves horses and always has. Mrs. Vaughan is a great teacher and has single handedly created a great program from scratch. She found funding to have a new barn facility built.

This semester's students are the first to use the new facility. Virginia Governor Tim Kaine is going to appear at the grand opening for the facility. Two students were selected according to test scores to attend the grand opening and to meet the Governor. Melissa was one of those students and she was extremely excited about it.

Yesterday she was told that because of a scheduling conflict (she has to be at the STEM Center in Halifax at the time of the grand opening) she wouldn't be allowed to miss that class to attend the event at the barn facility. You can imagine how heartbroken she is and she feels like the entire school is out to make her senior year the worst year possible.

The more I think about this the angrier I become. Trisha and I have emailed and called the school to find out exactly what the problem is. They had no problem with her missing three weeks of CL English, but the refuse to let her miss one Pre-Calculus class. Where is the logic in that? The logic is that THEIR SCREW UPS mean nothing, but they can't bend their rules to allow a student to attend a prestigious event when that student worked hard to beat out all the other students.

I sent an email to Ms. Vaughan last night and I haven't received a reply. Trisha called Ms. Griles this morning and had to leave a voice mail message. Her call hasn't been returned, either.

The grand opening is happening as I type this, and I'm not happy.

The moral of the story: send your kids to HCHS, where administration errors are fine, while attendance issues are more important than rewarding hard work.

UPDATE:

Ms. Griles returned Trisha's phone call (probably after returning from ribbon cutting ceremony). She said that the teacher was to submit a list of 'suggested students' to her for approval. Melissa didn't get picked by Ms. Griles because her first block class is off campus at the STEM Center. When asked why it was ok to throw Melissa into CL English after 3 weeks and it wasn't ok for her to miss one Pre-Calculus class Ms. Griles had no answer.

She said that Ms. Vaughan shouldn't have told the students who would be going until she had received approval from administration. I can understand that, but it doesn't change the fact that Melissa was disqualified simply because she couldn't be in the building at the right time. It also reeks of 'passing the buck.'

Don't you just love the nonchalant attitude administrators have when they're cutting you off at the knees?

I still do not have a reply to last night's email to Ms. Vaughan. I'm still interested in hearing what she has to say about it. I wonder if she shares Ms. Griles laissez-faire attitude?

I'm still angry, and the more I think about the entire mismanagement of the situation the angrier I get. Melissa isn't in the top ten and she isn't a star athlete, so her chances are rather low of being recognized by the school system for something else.

Throughout Melissa's time at HCHS I've tried to remain optimistic about the school even when I heard others' horror stories of mismanagement and callousness. Even though I knew the school wasn't perfect, I thought they did a reasonably good job. I've even been one of the most vocal proponents of the school system over on www.halifaxtalk.com. Right now I'm reconsidering everything I thought I knew about the system.

I know there are some great people (especially teachers) working there trying to give our students an excellent education. If they face the same nonchalance then I pity them and hope that they can excel in the face of adversity.

Congratulations HCHS administration. You've let down another student.

Panic at the Funplex!

The B-52's still have it.

The first single from their new album, both titled Funplex, is great! The songwriting for all of those shows is strong, and certain songs seem to speak to me. I love the underlying themes of all three shows, but today I want to point out Season's of Love from Rent. It's a song that reminds us to measure our lives in love instead of all the other insignificant things that we deal with every day. Our friends and families are more important than all that and they deserve more than we sometimes give them.

Watch the video and read along with the lyrics and allow the song to speak to you.

Seasons of Love
Original Broadway Cast

Company :
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand
Six Hundred Minutes
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand
Moments So Dear
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand
Six Hundred Minutes
How Do you Measure - Measure A Year ?

In Daylights - In Sunsets
In Midnights - In Cups Of Coffee
In Inches - In Miles
In Laughter - In Strife
*
In - Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand
Six Hundred Minutes
How Do You Measure
A Year In The Life
*
How About Love ?
How About Love ?
How About Love ?
Measure In Love
*
Seasons Of Love
Seasons Of Love
*
Soloist # 1 :
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand
Six Hundred Minutes
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand
Journeys To Plan
*
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand
Six Hundred Minutes
How Do You Measure The Life
Of A Women Or A Man ?
*
Soloist # 2 :
In Truths That She Learned
Or In Times That He Cried
In Bridges He Burned
Or The Way That She Died
*
All :
It's Time Now - To Sing out
Tho` The Story Never Ends
Let's Celebrate
Remember A Year In The Life of Friends
*
Remember The Love
Remember The Love
Remember The Love
Measure
In Love
*
Soloist # 1 :
Measure Measure Your Life In Love
*
Seasons Of Love ...
Seasons Of Love

The New Star Trek Film

I've seen some spy shots of shooting locations, and I've read some supposed plot spoilers, but I am reserving my judgment until I see the movie. However, there are rumblings in the blog-verse that Abrams may be changing too many things.

One of my favorite bloggers, Wil Wheaton, says it better than I:

On one hand, this could be Abrams saying, "I'm going to take Star Trek and make it relevant to an audience that hasn't loved it and watched it for 40 years." That's not necessarily a bad thing.

On the other hand, it could be him saying, "Look, Trekkies, I know you've been watching this show for 40 years, but I'm JJ Fucking Abrams and if I want to 'reinvent' this thing that means so much to you, I'm going to do it. So don't get your spacesuits in a knot when I put turbines on the Enterprise, okay? They look cool!" That would be a very bad thing.

I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

Pennsylvania Tuesday

One of the politcal blogs that I read posted this today and made me laugh:

Hillary Clinton will win Pennsylvania.

Arguments over the meaning or meaninglessness of her win will dominate MSM and stretch bandwidth to its breaking point. I don't, and I suspect that you don't, either. I guess Bill Gates and a few other Microsoft execs might be happy with it, but I haven't seen anyone not on the Microsoft payroll who is willing to admit it.

I purchased a new Acer laptop last year on a whim. The technical specs seemed fine for my use. Intel Dual Core processor, 1 gigabyte of RAM, 160GB hard drive, CD/DVD burner. I wanted it to use as a surfing machine, blogging, and some light word processing and spreadsheet work. It came with Windows Vista Home Standard Edition pre-installed. At first I was reasonably pleased with it. Even though the boot time was long, I liked the eye candy that Vista brought to the table. It's networking system was a little quirky, but I finally got it working with my home and office networks: printing to different printers, sharing folders, etc.

After a couple of months with the machine I started to realize it's weaknesses. Suspend and hibernate never worked properly and would often require a cold reboot to return the computer to a usable state. Then it sunk in that the eye candy was just that... eye candy. It wasn't really functional or useful. It was pretty to look at, but served no purpose. Boot times seemed to get longer and longer, but I admit that could just be my perception of the machine changing over time. Then the real issue started. Occasionally it would lock up during the shutdown process, requiring me to hold the power button to force it to shut down. Then it would complain about that on the next boot. I was getting more and more frustrated and started to read other people's issues with Vista online. There are a lot of people out there on the internet(s) that are very, very unhappy with this OS. Some even call it Windows ME 2.

I did some investigation into 'downgrading' to Windows XP. I heard that Microsoft was allowing some users to do that for free so I called to check. Of course I wasn't eligible, and would have to purchase a copy of XP if I wanted to install it on my laptop. I decided that that route wasn't for me. I feel like I've given Microsoft enough of my money, and they produced and forced new PC and laptop owners to adopt Vista, which is a broken product.

Linux seemed like a good choice as a replacement OS on my laptop. I'd installed Ubuntu on my teenage daughter's desktop PC about a year ago and it had worked out great for her. It did everything she needed and wanted, and I didn't have any virus or spyware issues to resolve for her.

After I decided that Ubuntu would be my new operating system I had to decide if I wanted to have a dual boot system or not. Part of me wanted to hold on to Vista for the 'just in case' quotient, but I eventually decided to go cold turkey, no dual boot, 100% Ubuntu.

The install went very smooth. The only hardware issue I had was the wireless adapter and I quickly found the fix for it on the Ubuntu support forums. It's now been about two months since the install and I haven't regretted it at all. I'm still experimenting with Wine to get a couple of Windows only applications working, but overall I am extremely happy with the system. It's easy to update and to customize the look and feel, and everything just works.

This is definitely not the same Linux that I tried several years ago. While I had fun playing with it on an older computer, it wasn't ready for me to use exclusively. Ubuntu, on the other hand, is a true replacement for Windows, and it's ready for prime time.

If you're unhappy with Vista or sick of Microsoft's exploitation of humanity you should give Ubuntu or one of it's derivatives a try. You would probably be pleasantly surprised.

Wow... where have I been?

I've been neglecting the blog for far too long.

If you're still reading here, keep looking. At the same time, don't let it's short length fool you into thinking it's short on content. Wheaton conveys his touching stories, all were entries in his blog, with emotion and depth of which many more well known writers have little grasp. You'll laugh and you may cry, but most of all you will identify with the author and you will understand.

Run, don't walk, to MonolithPress.com and order your copy. The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 And I Feel Fine... last night at the local Wal-Hell. I've always liked R.E.M., but I admit that I got into their music later in their catalog, mostly the late 80's and early 90's releases. I don't know why I never really went back and listened to their early stuff, especially since one of my friends back then was the world's biggest R.E.M. fan.

I'm really impressed with these early songs, and I think they are touching me in a way that they wouldn't have when I was a teenager. One song in particular is speaking to me as a comment on our society, Pretty Persuasion. I'm posting the lyrics here so that you might enjoy them and seek out this album as well.

R.E.M. - Pretty Persuasion

It's what I want, hurry and buy,
All has been tried, follow reason and buy,
Cannot shuffle in this heat, it's all wrong
Try to put that on your sleeve it's all wrong it's all wrong

He's got a pretty persuasion
She's got pretty persuasion
God damn, pure confusion
She's got pretty persuasion

It's what I want, hurry and buy,
All has been tried, follow reasoning,
And I put that in this heat it's all wrong
Try to wear that on my sleeve it's all wrong all wrong

He's got a pretty persuasion
She's got pretty persuasion
God damn, pure confusion
He's got pretty persuasion

In the light I saw
Quite a scene there

It's what I want, hurry and buy,
All has been tried, follow reason and buy,
Try to put that in this heat it's all wrong
Cannot wear that on your sleeve it's all wrong it's all wrong

Frustration

Every Spring I seem to get into a funk that I can't seem to shake.

Tax time is stressful for me because I have to get our corporate returns ready, then I have to deal with my personal taxes. I've been trying to work on all of that this week along with my normal work duties, which always seem to fall behind when I'm trying to get other things done.

On top of that I've been dealing with a difficult customer that can't seem to understand the most basic concepts. I know that dealing with people is part of my job, but sometimes it just sucks. 99% of our customers are like family to me, but when I get a real thorn like this one it makes me want another job where I have no contact with the public.

Any of you readers out there that can spare some good mojo thoughts and vibes would be most appreciated. I'm loving the start to this season with Jeff Burton effectively leading the points and having great finishes so far.

NASCAR.com did a complete redesign on the site just before the start of the season. Boy did they miss the mark. I agree that the old site wasn't functionally perfect or pleasing to the eye, but man they really took a couple of giant steps backwards.

The site is uglier than ever, and the rotating banner menu thing is pure crap. It takes forever to load on broadband. I can't even imagine trying to use the site over a dial-up connection.

I also haven't been able to find my favorite section of the site: the weekly power ranking. It was consistently a funny read and it gave you an idea of which drivers to keep an eye on. Trisha came by the shop and when I finished up the three of us headed over to Earnie's Restaurant.

We had intended on getting their Vday special that my sister had told us about: NY strip steak, salad, potato and soda for two. We walked in and were seated very quickly, but we had to go to the very back of the restaurant because most of the tables were already reserved. We waited and waited but no one ever came to take out order. Eventually we decided that none of us wanted steak and decided that we would all have their buffet. The BBQ on their buffet is usually excelent and I was looking forward to it.

We continued to wait and wait for service. I was ready to get up and leave when Trisha told Melissa to go ahead to the buffet. Melissa went to the buffet and came back and we still hadn't seen a waitress. At this point I'm more than ready to walk out, but Trisha insists that I let her handle it. She tells me to go ahead to the buffet and she would have our drinks at the table when I got back.

I went to the buffet and she walked up to the owner, hands him our menus and asks him if he can bring a Coke, sweet tea, and an un-sweatened tea to our table. That suddenly got the attention of almost the entire staff. Needless to say we were well taken care of after that.

In the end I didn't enjoy the BBQ that I wanted because it was too salty. Everything else was pretty good, and I really enjoyed the salad, so I guess it wasn't a total wash.

I've learned my lesson, though. Never go out to dinner on Valentine's Day. Go before or after, but never ever on Valentine's Day.

Cats... the good, the bad, and the cute

We 'rescued' a cat a few months ago. I use the term rescue loosely because I think he picked us our of all the houses in the neighborhood and we didn't really have a choice in the matter.

One morning as I went outside to start my truck to let it warm up I heard soft meowing coming from underneath Trisha's car. I peeked underneath and saw him, barely old enough to be away from his mother, looking back at me with bright eyes. I couldn't convince get my hands on him, so I went inside to get some help. Melissa came out with me and by the time we got back outside he had moved from under the car to a new hiding place behind our garbage can. Melissa grabbed him quickly and we brought him inside.

He was dirty, smelly, and flea infested. He was also the cutest gray tabby we'd ever seen. We washed him, took him to the vet and loved him. Melissa named him Tiger. The name may seem uninspired... until you meet him. His attack is vicious and I have the scars to prove it. I jokingly call him Demon Kitty, and most people agree that it's pretty accurate after they meet him. He's been destructive like all kittens and refuses to leave our dog Boots alone. Boots tolerates him well and watching them play fight is very entertaining unless it's three in the morning.

Tiger is now about three months old, and is starting to calm down just a bit. We're waiting for the day that he can go in for his surgery to remove his boy bits. I hope that will calm him down even more. He can be the sweetest kitten you've ever met, but those moments don't last long and I'm looking forward to the day that those moments are longer and more frequent.

Why we love dogs

I read this interesting article about why we love dogs. The mini-series and the first season were definitely the best science fiction ever produced for TV and probably the best drama ever produced for TV.

Season two was great, but in my opinion it didn't quite reach the level of season one.

This season, I've become perplexed a bit. Some episodes are great, while others fall far below average. I realize that it's impossible to hit a home run with every episode, but it seems that the show has become more of a gamble recently.

Last night's episode, The Woman King, left me a bit confused. I admit that I was very tired and probably need to watch the episode again (thank goodness for DVR's), but I never got the reasoning behind setting up the camp of people on the Galactica. Was it explained and I just missed it, or was it just a cheap plot building stunt? Will we ever see these refugees again?

I did like that overall story of discrimination, and I think Agathon's character deserved a bit more fleshing out especially since he's done a few unpopular things recently, but the setup just seemed cheap and over the top to me.

Anyone else have any ideas?
